So, I woke up from a dream in one of those awkward sleeping positions where my head was kinda torqed at an angle and my left arm was trying to make like a piece of origami beneath me. Yeh, I sleep oddly sometimes like that and it tends to yield some of the best (or at least memorable) dreams.
Case in point, there is a woman at work who is just all kinds of awesome: smart, funny, caring, crazy, attractive and all in fairly equal amounts. I had a dream about her. It was one of those damnably real sorta dreams where you wake up going what the fuck?!
We were… I don’t even know where. It was by work I guess but not the place we work now. It was late fall, cold out but not terribly. It was in the afternoon, she was in her car but not the car she drives normally… I’m pretty sure it was a muscle car though. I was on my way home.
She popped out of her car when I got close and greeted me. She kissed me on the cheek playfully. The brief touch of her lips to my face… a shot of warmth that runs right through me. That feeling you get when you are really cold and then you drink hot cocoa and how you notice the heat radiate in you? Yeh, it was like that. She landed another such kiss happily followed by one on the lips… which might as well have been a taser.
I was stupidly happily frozen in place as she hopped and skipped off to go into work. She looked back a moment, smiling a little grin to my stunned happy stupid face. I mused in the moment as she slipped out of sight. The crisp cool of an early evening’s wind whisping quickly by, I turned to continue on home.
And then I woke up. Besides the two of us, everything else was something I couldn’t place. It was in the city but a run down part of it with old buildings easily forgettable. In short, it was someplace I can never recall having actually been to.
It always freaks me out a little that my brain just manifests entire environments and scenarios that have never occurred. If it was at least something I could tie to having seen on tv or in a movie it would make sense. Then I could go-oh yeh, it was from that thing I was watching!
Dreams like this though almost seem to come from a different lifetime, parallel dimension or alternate reality. Then I think that’s just too beyond anything to be believable. I go - good one brain, you got me. But what if dreams that seem so completely real aren’t just the hyper creations of the unconscious mind?
What if indeed.
